The cowboy’s scarf hung around their necks and was adjusted to fit around their face. Not only for keeping their face dry from sweat, but to blow their nose on. Also, when the cattle would move around, or on a cattle drive, they would pull the scarf up over their nose to keep the dust out of their nose and mouth.
